No. Classic plug-in disablers are built for AFM engines (about 2007–2021) and pre-2022 DFM trucks with a 6- or 8-speed. 2022.5+ trucks and 2021+ SUVs use newer "Global B" electronics and need a dedicated module. Heavy-duty 2500/3500 trucks have no AFM at all.
It cuts the number of times the lifters switch on and off, which is why owners buy one. But no independent study shows it prevents failures, and some lifter failures have nothing to do with AFM. Treat it as risk reduction, not a guarantee.
Usually a little. Owners and tests report 0 to 3 mpg less, mostly on the highway where cylinder deactivation saved the most.
Makers sell them under the EPA's 2020 tampering policy. In California, only one we track has a CARB Executive Order: the Range RA007 (D-115-32) for 2021–2024 Global B vehicles. The others are not legal on California-registered vehicles. Several states inspect cars through the OBD-II port. We report the facts; we don't give legal advice.
